A Little Reminder to Accept Your Friends As They Are

A Little Reminder to Accept Your Friends As They Are

Imagine you are out with a group of friends and one person wants to head home early. As her friend, there are two options. One option is to tease her for being lame, blame her for ruining your night out and pressure her to stay. Another option is to respect her decision, give her a big hug and ask her to text you when she’s arrived home safely. Who would you rather be friends with? Someone who is judgmental and selfish, or someone who is accepting and kind?

It’s only natural to feel disappointment if a close friend wants to go in a different direction to you or isn't interested in the same things you are. But let's be real, a solid friendship has a foundation of stone. It is based on more than just convenience or fulfilling each others expectations. It has a real strength to it, which is built on acceptance, openness, kindness and warmth.

When I was younger, I had lots of commitments. I couldn't always be at the parties I wanted to be at or go shopping on the weekend. But my friends were really accepting and supportive of me. They understood it wasn't personal and that I was working towards my own dreams. I was so grateful that my friends accepted me as I am. It made me feel loved for me, not just because I did what they wanted or impressed them. And I think that’s the beauty of friendship, acceptance of each others choices - regardless if they are the same as yours.
